Day 8 Holbrook to Peach Springs

We are writing this from Hualapai (wal-a-pie) Lodge in the indian reservation of Hualapai.

This leaves us two more days of Route 66 driving with tomorrow's stretch from here to Needles before
we detour to Las Vegas after a couple of days winning millions we head back south to drop back on
to 66 a few miles down the road from Needles to finish off.  So feels like the end is nigh although still a
few more days to go.  Albeit so looking forward to seeing the offspring, which even Heidi mentioned
she missed, although not as much as the cats!

Anyway, back to the tour, a day back on footing with the best bits, I.e. just us on the open road...

Starting the day after a very similar breakfast to the previous 6 or 7 days we headed back into Holbrook
for a couple of photo's including our accomodation next time...

You even get your own old car.

A brief stop at Geronimo Trading Post to view the biggest petrified tree at 80 tons...  Smaller versions,
much smaller, were retailing at 6000 dollars, we only gave these a miss due to weight restrictions on the
plane.

As we headed along we didn't see the signs which originally ran up to 400 miles from the Jack
Rabbit Trading Post in both directions counting down to this gift store and cafe.  The strap line "if
you haven't been to Jck Rabbit you haven't been to the south west" was a a little optimistic as the
current Post is at best quite poor.  But we bought a couple of cokes, and kept the bottle tops!

Heidi riding a rabbit.  Makes a change.  Heidi riding...

Next stop Wilmslow which was very much into the the 66 spirit and merited a walk round the town in
90 degree heat.  The town boasts the "standing on the corner" statue dedicated to the classic eagles
song Take It Easy.  The mural behind shows a girl in a flat bed ford as if reflected in a shop window.  My
eyes are upstairs!  The other thing to watch for is cuddling metal statues when the sun's out!

We headed on westward and the landscape changed as we hit Flagstaff and trees emerged.  Not
much desert in Arizona so far.

Stopping for another great burger with serious wedges at Rod's Steak House in Williams, another
town, in fact the last Route 66 town to be bypassed, in 1984.  This place also was very much 66
orientated.

We headed on brimming with beef with a brief stop at Seligman for another coke and more from Cars.

Then 36 miles of mostly empty straight road with great views to our nights stop, but not before getting
a brief peak of the Grand Canyon to the north as we peaked a summit.

Last one for you El, (okay and also for Sam and Mill and Tom and Will as you all are the best horse
riders in t'world ever II).  This was some geysers ranch with proper plains and big and everything.

Can you see the G C?

So it's getting late and as we listen to the fantastic horn of the trains, which albeit we are driving Route
66 the railroad is the backbone for many of the towns as much as the road was later it will be something
that I will remember, I might even buy a book and read about it.

Okay back to it, so its getting late and with some bends to negotiate tomorrow as we head west then
north to Las Vegas we should be getting to bed where hopefully we can have a good sha
re of our queen sized bed.

  4. All sounds interesting - Rose has recommended some eating places in Vegas as she has been a few times - Andre's in the Monte Carlo Casino (best meal) - Lavo = Italian in the Palazzo and Henry's in the Cosmopolitan or fish & chips in Gordon Ramsey's in Ceasars - all not cheap could pay 100 dollars for 2. Free dancing in the Paris Hotel or the Barge in Caesars
